School Year 2008-2009

The Goldstone School of Hope Worldwide kicked off a new school year with some very exciting changes. The school added three new teachers this year to the staff. The new teachers include two Khmer Language instructors and a new English teacher from Seattle, Washington.
Stephen Wood is the new English teacher. He graduated from the University of Washington and has moved to Cambodia to teach English for the 2008-2009 academic school year. Stephen has experience teaching ESL to college students and has worked with many ESL language programs from other universities. He is excited to be part of the staff we have here at the Goldestone School of Hope Worldwide.
The staff also includes a part-time volunteer from the United States who is teaching Art. Rachel Faller recently moved to Cambodia to complete her Fulbright scholarship research. She is a graduate from the Maryland Institute of College and Arts and has generously agreed to spend time teaching art to our students. Stephen and Rachel have also begun working on collaborative projects that will incorporate works of art and stories written by students in their English classes. The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to give the students a new and exciting avenue for learning and to get their work displayed in local shops and businesses here in Phnom Penh.

Mr.Ted Karonis visited the School

We hope you had a Merry Christmas and happy New Year! In December we had a very special guest with us here at the Goldstone School of Hope Worldwide. His name was Ted Karonis and he came bearing a Christmas present of different sorts to the school: a test!

Mr. Karonis graciously spent his Christmas vacation with us here at the Goldstone School of Hope Worldwide and helped us administer a test called the English Language Development Test, or ELDT. Mr. Karonis has many years of experience teaching ESL and working in ESL schools in the state of California, and the test he brought with him was the same test that all English as a second language students have to take before being placed into public schools.

It took us more than a week to get through the entire test, which measured speaking, listening, writing, and reading abilities of grades 3 through 8 at the school in the same way that they would be measured in the United States. Many of the students had never even taken a test of this sort before. After a lot of patience both on the students and teachers part, we now have precious information that is going to be invaluable for us as we further write and fine-tune our English curriculum. Mr. Karonis also observed the English teacher in his classroom and was able to give him much appreciated advice from his many years of experience.

We are all very grateful to Mr. Karonis for coming and helping us during the holidays. Not many people can come to a school during Christmas and make taking a 30 page test fun, but Mr. Karonis did just that. Thank you for your heart to help us, Ted.
